Khachkar — Rooted iN Armenia
Some symbols belong to a single moment in history. The khachkar belongs to all of them at once.
Since the 9th century, Armenians have been carving cross-stones — vertical stone slabs bearing a cross at the center, surrounded by interlocking patterns of vines, leaves, and geometric interlace. No two khachkars are identical. Each one is a unique work of art, carved by a master craftsman and erected to mark something that mattered — a life, a victory, a prayer, a memory.
In 2010, UNESCO placed khachkars on the List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Not as a historical artifact. As a living tradition — one still practiced, still transmitted, still carved by hand in Armenia and across the diaspora today. Alchetron
The design did not need to invent meaning. It needed to find the right way to carry what was already there.
The Central Idea
The khachkar and the grapevine have always belonged together.
Grapes appear on khachkars going back centuries — woven into the stone patterns alongside leaves, pomegranates, and interlace. They are not decoration. They are theology. Armenia is among the oldest winemaking civilizations on earth — the land where Noah's vineyard took root after the flood, where faith and soil became the same thing.
The design builds on that ancient connection deliberately. The khachkar does not simply sit in front of the vine. It grows from the same root. The cross and the vine are one organism — faith and land inseparable, both drawing from the same source.
That is the entire meaning of "Rooted N Armenia." Not a tagline. A thesis.
The Sketch
The working sketch shows every decision being made in real time.
The interwoven knots needed to be tighter — the braid running through the cross shaft was roughed in first and refined toward the geometric precision of the final. The vine detail was questioned repeatedly — more grapes? The answer in the final was yes, enough to read clearly at the scale of a shirt without overwhelming the cross itself.
The font was flagged as potentially too rough in the sketch phase — "text font — too rough?" The final "Rooted N Armenia" blackletter sits at exactly the right weight — medieval enough to connect to the source material, refined enough to wear cleanly.
The base was designed as roots — the cross emerging from the earth rather than standing on it. That decision, locked early in the sketch, is what gives the entire composition its meaning. It is not a cross placed on Armenia. It is a cross grown from it.
The Two Elements
The khachkar in the final design is rendered in white — clean, sharp, every interlocking knot and petal precisely resolved. The braided shaft running from the roots through the center to the top carries the weight of the stone carving tradition in graphic form.
Behind it, the grapevine spreads in warm gold-brown — leaves, curling tendrils, clusters of grapes hanging on both sides. The two-tone palette keeps them in their correct relationship: the cross in the foreground, the vine as the world it grows in.
The roots at the base of the cross merge with the vine's root system below the composition — they are not two separate things meeting at the bottom. They share the same ground.
The UNESCO Line
At the very bottom of the design, in small spaced capitals:

This line is not marketing. It is a fact — the international recognition of what Armenians have always known. Including it on the shirt is a statement: what we carry has been seen, documented, and declared worthy of protection by the world.
The dagger symbol between KHACHKAR and UNESCO is a typographic cross. Intentional.
The Final Composition
The hierarchy reads as:
The khachkar — the anchor, the symbol, the craft The grapevine — the land, the history, the root The roots — where faith and soil become the same thing The phrase — the thesis, direct and complete The UNESCO line — the world's acknowledgment
Everything in this design was already in the tradition. The design's job was to find the form that lets it be worn.
