Product Description
In 405 AD, St. Mesrop Mashtots completed the Armenian alphabet. Before that year, Armenian existed only as a spoken language — scripture was read in Greek or Syriac, administered by those who controlled the text. Mashtots changed that. Thirty-six letters. The first sentence written in Armenian was a line from Proverbs. Within a generation, the Bible was fully translated. A language that cannot be written can be suppressed. A language with its own alphabet cannot.
Mashtots didn't just create letters. He built columns. The Armenian word for enduring — մնայուն — stands at the center of the design like a structure, each letterform a pillar holding weight. That is what the alphabet did: turned a spoken language into something architectural, something that could bear the pressure of centuries without breaking. The word enduring, written in the letters he made, enduring.
