Product Description
The Armenian alphabet contains 38 letters, each designed in a single act of creation by Mesrop Mashtots in 405 AD. Most alphabets evolved across centuries. This one was invented in a defined moment, for a defined purpose: to give Armenians a script that belonged entirely to them. The letter խ — Khe, the twenty-second — has appeared on monastery walls, manuscript borders, and carved stone inscriptions for sixteen hundred years. A single letter holds that entire record.
The ornamentation is not random. Look closer and the scrollwork resolves into a cross — the letter set precisely at its center, the flowing forms building out to four arms. Mashtots created the Armenian alphabet to translate scripture. The first text written in Armenian was the Bible. The letter and the cross have been in this relationship for sixteen hundred years. One holds the center. The other gives it meaning.
