Arno Babajanyan wrote the songs that Charles Aznavour carried to the world. The two were close friends — Aznavour, the Armenian-French icon, and Babajanyan, who stayed in Soviet Yerevan and composed. Between classical concert halls and Moscow prizes, he built a body of work that moved in both directions: rigorous enough for conservatories, direct enough for the radio. His "Elegy" remains one of the defining pieces of Armenian music. Most people who have heard Aznavour have heard Babajanyan.Babajanyan's silhouette reaches upward, arms open — not performing, but pulling.
