In December 1988, an earthquake leveled nearly half of Gyumri in under a minute. The city had existed under multiple names — Kumayri, Alexandropol, Leninakan — each one layered over a culture older than any of its rulers. It was known for its craftsmen, its sharp humor, and a particular stubbornness that made it unlike anywhere else in Armenia. The earthquake destroyed buildings. It did not destroy what Gyumri was.
