Product Description
Monte Melkonian was born in Visalia, California in 1957. He studied history and archaeology at Berkeley. By the time the Nagorno-Karabakh war began in 1991, he had already been arrested, imprisoned in France, and spent years working for Armenian self-determination from the diaspora. He went to Karabakh anyway. An Armenian-American with no military academy, commanding forces that were outgunned and outmanned, in a war most of the world couldn't find on a map. His nom de guerre was Avo. He died in battle on June 12, 1993. He was 35 years old.
The portrait is hand-sketched — the face of a man who made a decision and then made it again, every day until he couldn't. His name sits in bold below it, the way a monument reads. Monte Melkonian's story is not ancient. It happened in living memory, in a war that is still unfinished, fought by a man who drove away from everything California could offer to stand in a place the rest of the world had already decided wasn't worth standing in. That is what this is.
