Astghik's name means little star. She was Armenia's goddess of love and water — daughter of Aramazd, keeper of rivers, the one to whom roses were offered. Her feast became Vardavar: every summer, Armenians still throw water at each other in celebration. The holiday survived Armenia's conversion to Christianity in 301 AD, survived the Soviet era, survived everything.
