Product Description
Every summer, Armenians throw water at each other in a festival called Vardavar. The holiday survived Armenia's conversion to Christianity in 301 AD, was absorbed into the church calendar, and is still celebrated today. It was originally held in honor of Astghik — goddess of love, water, and beauty. Daughter of Aramazd. Sister of Anahit. The goddess was forgotten by name. The festival she inspired was not.
The goddess stands in profile beneath a stone arch, amphora raised and pouring. Water cascades from the vessel. A rose sits in her hair. Mountains anchor the base. Classical columns frame her on either side. "ASTGHIK" runs at the base of the composition. Terracotta vessel, red rose, black line on black — each element placed with purpose.
