Product Description

Before he became one of Armenia's most beloved lyric poets, the empire had another word for him: wanted. Avetik Isahakyan (1875–1957) wrote of love, longing, and the motherland — and backed the Armenian liberation struggle with far more than verse. The state made him a prisoner for it twice: a year in Yerevan's prison after his arrest in 1896, then half a year in Tiflis's Metekha prison in 1908, seized alongside 158 fellow Armenian intellectuals. By 1911 he was driven into exile. The poems only grew louder. This design frames him the way the Tsarist state once did — a portrait behind bars, “Arrested 1896 · 1908” stamped across the file — and lets history hand down its own verdict. To the empire, a criminal. To Armenia, the Varpet — a voice that outlived them all.
