Yeghishe Charents knew he was being watched. By 1933, Soviet pressure had shifted from uncomfortable to dangerous — writers were expected to produce ideology, not poetry. Charents produced both, in the same text. His poem "Oh, Armenian People" appeared to praise Stalin while hiding an acrostic in Armenian script that read: Oh Armenian people, your only salvation is in your unity. He was arrested in 1937.
