Garni Temple stands in a gorge east of Yerevan — the only pre-Christian Hellenistic monument to survive intact in Armenia. It was built for Mihr, the Armenian god of light and truth, in the first century AD. Son of Aramazd, brother of Anahit and Nane, keeper of the sacred flame. His name is the root of the Armenian word for the sun. He was the god of oaths — the one sworn by, because he witnessed everything and forgot nothing.Archive VII closes the collection. The Temple of Garni was destroyed by earthquake in 1679 and rebuilt stone by stone three centuries later. His name persists in Armenian surnames and given names across the diaspora.
