In 1950, a 21-meter statue of Stalin stood on the hill above Yerevan. After de-Stalinization, it was removed. In 1967, it was replaced — with a woman holding a sword. The choice was deliberate. What had been a monument to foreign authority became Mother Armenia: the figure that watches over the city, sword held out, not put away. The hill didn't change. What stood on it did.The statue is rendered full-length — sword extended, figure elevated above the city she watches. Behind her: the Yerevan ferris wheel, its colored gondolas the only warmth in the composition. Trees line the path. Two figures walk below. A sun wheel marks the pedestal. All of it framed within a stone arch. The life of the city, held inside the frame of the monument that watches over it.
