Anahit was the chief goddess of the Armenian pantheon. Kings invoked her name before battle. Temples at Artashat, Yeriza, and Ashtishat drew pilgrims across the ancient world. Plutarch recorded the sight of her golden statues when Rome encountered Armenia at its height — among the largest cult images of antiquity. When Armenia adopted Christianity in 301 AD, those temples were destroyed and the statues melted.
