Yerevan was designed from scratch. In the 1920s, Alexander Tamanyan drew a master plan for a modern capital on land that had been a provincial outpost under Persian and Russian rule. The radial street system, the central boulevard, the ring roads — all deliberate. He built for a city of 150,000. Yerevan today holds over a million.
