Vardan Mamikonian lost the Battle of Avarayr in 451 AD. He died in it. The Persian Empire assembled one of the largest armies of the ancient world to force Armenia's conversion to Zoroastrianism. They won on the field. Then they won nothing else. The Armenians refused to convert. Thirty-three years later, Persia signed a treaty granting Armenia permanent religious freedom.
